AI Search Monitoring and Ongoing Optimization

AI search monitoring records which assistants name your business and which name a competitor instead. A fixed prompt set runs weekly against Google AI Overviews, ChatGPT, Perplexity and Gemini, and monthly against Claude, Grok and Meta AI. Every week you receive the citation log and the change we made in response. Book an audit below to set the baseline.

Book an AI visibility audit

Monitoring starts from a measured baseline. The audit records which assistants name your business today and which providers are named instead. Five fields start it: name, email, website URL, phone and the service you sell. Name, email and website URL are required.

What AI search monitoring measures

AI search monitoring measures citation rate: how often each assistant names your business when asked a buying question. A fixed prompt set runs on a schedule, and every answer is logged with the domains it cited.

Citation rate is the count of prompts naming your business divided by the count of prompts run, held per assistant and per week. An answer surface is the place a generated answer appears: an AI Overviews panel above the organic results, a chat reply, or the cited-source list printed beneath either one. Monitoring reads three values from every answer: the provider named first, the competing providers named alongside it, and the domains the assistant cited as sources. Position and citation move independently — an assistant names a competitor first and still cites your domain beneath the answer. The log keeps position and citation apart rather than collapsing them into a single rank.

Which assistants are checked, and how often

Four assistants are checked weekly: Google AI Overviews, ChatGPT, Perplexity and Gemini. Three are checked monthly: Claude, Grok and Meta AI. Weekly cadence follows index refresh rate; the monthly three change more slowly.

Which assistants are checked, and how often
AssistantCadenceRetrieval layer that sets the cadence

PerplexityWeeklyown crawler plus third-party search

ClaudeMonthlythird-party web search, smaller retrieval footprint
GrokMonthlythe X corpus plus web search
Meta AIMonthlythird-party search partnership

Weekly: AI Overviews, ChatGPT, Perplexity, Gemini. Monthly: Claude, Grok, Meta AI. The four weekly assistants read from indexes that refresh inside a week, so a repair made now appears in the next run. The three monthly assistants retrieve through slower third-party layers, and weekly runs against them return the same answer rather than new signal. Grok and Meta AI are reported, never promised: presence on X drives Grok, and Meta AI is the least controllable surface in the set.

Why the prompt wording never changes

Reworded prompts produce different answers, which makes week-to-week comparison meaningless. The prompt set is frozen at the start of an engagement. New prompts are added as a separate series rather than replacing existing ones.

A prompt set is the fixed list of buying questions that runs against every assistant on the cadence above, written in the wording a buyer uses rather than the wording a marketer prefers. Three properties are held constant for the life of an engagement: the exact characters of each prompt, the assistant each prompt runs against, and the position of the prompt in the run order. Freezing those properties makes every week-to-week difference attributable to the website rather than to the question. A prompt that needs different wording opens a new series with its own start date, and the original series continues unbroken beside it. Every figure in the report names the series it belongs to, so a rising citation rate is never the product of an easier question.

What arrives in the weekly report

Sample citation log — illustrative layout. Every value below is invented and describes no client.

Five items arrive in every weekly report: citation log, displacement record, change note, share of voice, and movement summary.

  • Citation logevery prompt, the assistant it ran against, and the domains that answer cited.
  • Displacement recordthe providers named in place of your business, by assistant and by prompt.
  • Change notethe edit made to the site that week, named with the URL it was made on.
  • Share of voiceyour named appearances as a percentage of all provider appearances across the prompt set.
  • Movement summarythe prompts that changed state since the previous week, named individually.

Read the sample as shape, not as result: in week 12 of this illustration, ChatGPT named the business on 4 of 12 prompts, against 1 of 12 in week 1. Your log carries your prompts and no figure until the first run completes.

Why click-through rate falls when this works

Impressions grow faster than clicks. One documented case recorded 30.5% more clicks and 98.6% more impressions, while click-through rate fell from 4.1% to 2.7%. Citation rate and call volume measure the outcome; click-through rate does not.

Those figures come from Koray Tuğberk Gübür's documented calculator case study, in which repositioning one component on a page produced the click and impression movement above while the ratio between them dropped. A dashboard watching click-through rate alone reads that result as a regression and the account as failing. Answer engines widen the same gap further, because an answer that cites your business resolves the question inside the result. Three figures carry the scoreboard on this retainer: impressions, citation rate and booked calls. Click-through rate stays on the report as context, and the expectation is set in writing before the first run rather than explained after the first drop.

Questions

Common questions

Every answer below ships in the raw HTML, so an assistant reading this page without running a script still receives it.

What does AI search monitoring cost?

The retainer is billed monthly at $1,200 for a single location or $2,800 for multi-location work, on a three-month minimum. One price covers the prompt set, the runs, the report, and the site changes made in response. The audit is quoted separately.

How often does the report arrive?

The citation log arrives weekly, covering Google AI Overviews, ChatGPT, Perplexity and Gemini. Claude, Grok and Meta AI enter the report in the week their monthly run completes. Reporting continues for the length of the retainer.

What happens when an assistant names a competitor?

The displacement record names the provider, the prompt that produced it, and the page the assistant cited. A change is made to the site that week, and the next report states that change.
