How to Measure AI Visibility

Measuring AI visibility takes three steps: build a fixed prompt set of 20 to 40 real buying questions, run it against each assistant on a schedule, and record which domains every answer cited. Citation rate is prompts naming you divided by prompts run. Calculate yours below. Click-through rate falls during successful work and misleads anyone tracking it alone.

Citation-rate calculator

Enter the two numbers from one run of one prompt set against one assistant.

  • Prompts runhow many prompts you sent in this run. A whole number, 1 or higher.
  • Prompts that named your businesshow many of those answers wrote the business name, listed its domain as a source, or did both. A whole number, 0 or higher, never larger than prompts run.
  • Assistantwhich assistant produced the run: Google AI Overviews, ChatGPT, Perplexity, Gemini, Claude, Grok or Meta AI.

Result, stated as a sentence: Named on 4 of 20 ChatGPT prompts is a 20 percent citation rate.

Three worked rows, computed the same way: 4 of 20 is 20 percent, 7 of 20 is 35 percent, 3 of 40 is 7.5 percent.

Before the first run, three items are needed: a written prompt set, one account on each assistant, and a sheet holding one row per prompt per assistant per run.

Step 1

How to measure AI visibility

Three steps measure AI visibility. Build a fixed prompt set of real buying questions. Run it against each assistant on a schedule. Record which domains every answer cited. Citation rate is the resulting metric.

An answer surface is any place where an assistant composes a reply instead of returning a list of links. Seven carry commercial answers: Google AI Overviews, ChatGPT, Perplexity, Gemini, Claude, Grok and Meta AI. Each surface names its own sources, so each surface is measured on its own.

  1. Build a prompt set of 20 to 40 buying questions, written in the wording buyers use.
  2. Run every prompt against each assistant on a fixed schedule, one clean session per assistant per run.
  3. Record three values for every prompt: the businesses named in the answer text, the domains listed as sources, and the run date.

A baseline is the first complete run of the set, captured before any change is made to the site. Every later run is read against that baseline, which is what turns a single observation into a measurement.

Step 2

How to build a prompt set

A prompt set contains 20 to 40 questions taken verbatim from real buyer wording, covering purchase, comparison and diagnostic intent. Wording is frozen at creation. New questions form a separate series rather than replacing existing ones.

A prompt set is the fixed list of questions every run uses without alteration. Frozen wording enables comparison: two runs answer the same question only when the question was identical in both.

Five criteria govern the set.

  • Wording copied verbatim from buyer language — sales calls, form submissions, support email — never from a keyword tool's phrasing.
  • Size held between 20 and 40 questions, wide enough to cover three intents and short enough to run by hand across seven assistants.
  • Coverage split across three intents: purchase, comparison and diagnostic.
  • Geography written inside the prompt where the business serves a defined area, because a prompt naming no place returns a national answer.
  • Versioning applied to every addition — new questions open a second series, numbered separately, while the original series continues unchanged.

Platforms automate part of a run and leave part of it manual. The coverage each one reaches is set out in ai visibility tools, compared.

Step 3

How to calculate citation rate

Citation rate divides the number of prompts naming your business by the number of prompts run, per assistant, per week. A business named on 4 of 20 ChatGPT prompts records a 20 percent citation rate for that assistant.

citation rate = (prompts naming your business ÷ prompts run) × 100

The prompt set produces the citation rate, and no other input is required. Hold the calculation to one assistant and one run. A 40 percent rate on Perplexity and a 0 percent rate on Gemini average to a number describing neither surface.

Share of voice is the second metric and a different calculation: prompts naming your business divided by prompts naming any business in the category, across the same run. Citation rate answers whether you appear at all. Share of voice answers how much of the answer space you hold against rivals.

Stated as a sentence, the worked example reads: named on 4 of 20 prompts is a 20 percent citation rate.

Step 4

Which metrics mislead

Click-through rate misleads most. Impressions grow faster than clicks during successful work, so the ratio falls. One documented case recorded 30.5 percent more clicks and 98.6 percent more impressions while click-through rate dropped from 4.1 to 2.7 percent.

Those figures come from a documented case study published by Koray Tuğberk Gübür. The arithmetic is the lesson: a 30.5 percent click rise divided by a 98.6 percent impression rise multiplies the ratio by 0.66, and 4.1 percent multiplied by 0.66 is 2.7 percent.

Three metrics mislead on answer surfaces.

  • Click-through rate falls as impressions rise, which records wider exposure rather than weaker work.
  • Impressions record link displays. Google defines a generative AI impression as a link to your site shown inside an AI feature, a different event from the business being named in the answer.
  • Average position is absent. Google's generative AI performance report carries four dimensions — pages, countries, dates and devices — position is not among them.

Search Console splits the two halves. Impressions for AI Overviews and AI Mode sit in the generative AI performance report; clicks from AI features fold into the Web search type of the main Performance report. A rate built from both divides numbers never counted together.

Step 5

How often to measure

Measure Google AI Overviews, ChatGPT, Perplexity and Gemini weekly, because their indexes refresh fast enough to show change. Measure Claude, Grok and Meta AI monthly. More frequent measurement on slow surfaces produces noise, not signal.

How often to measure
SurfaceCadenceHow sources appear
Google AI Overviewsweeklylinks beside the answer
ChatGPTweeklyinline citations, plus a Sources list
Perplexityweeklynumbered citations
Geminiweeklya sources panel
Claudemonthlycitations on search results
Grokmonthlya citation list, inline at the model's discretion
Meta AImonthlylinks where Meta-WebIndexer is allowed

Weekly: Google AI Overviews, ChatGPT, Perplexity, Gemini. Monthly: Claude, Grok, Meta AI.

Cadence follows index refresh rate. The four weekly surfaces rebuild an answer from a live search on each query, so seven days register real change. The monthly three move slowly enough that weekly sampling returns variance instead of movement. Continuous coverage across all seven is the monitoring retainer.

Questions

Common questions

Every answer below ships in the raw HTML, so an assistant reading this page without running a script still receives it.

Does a zero citation rate mean the site is broken?

A zero citation rate records absence, not cause. Three causes produce it: crawler access blocked, the business missing from the sources assistants corroborate against, and no page answering the question. Separating them is the diagnostic stage.

Do two runs of the same prompt return the same answer?

No. xAI documents that its model decides when and where to include citations based on query context; every assistant varies the same way. Frozen wording removes one variance source; repeated runs average out the rest.

Does Search Console measure AI visibility?

Partly. Google reports impressions for AI Overviews and AI Mode in its generative AI performance report. Five surfaces report to no webmaster console — ChatGPT, Perplexity, Claude, Grok and Meta AI — and stay manual.

What counts as being named?

Three events count, each in its own column: the business name written in the answer text, the domain listed in the citation set, and a link rendered in the interface. Citation rate counts the first two.
