Entity SEO: Being Understood, Not Just Found

Entity SEO makes a business resolvable as a record rather than readable as a name. Assistants match queries to records carrying stable identifiers — Wikidata QIDs, knowledge graph entries, linked public profiles. A name that resolves to nothing competes as an ambiguous string, and strings are not recommended. None of the six Kansas City competitors we audited emits any entity identifier at all.

Five questions separate a business name from a business record. Each one is answered in its own block below, in the order the distinction builds.

  • Definitionthe practice of making a business resolvable as a record rather than readable as a name.
  • Distinctionwhy two businesses sharing one trade name are one string and two entities.
  • Resolutionthe steps an assistant runs between a typed name and a returned record: match, narrow, return.
  • Requirementsthe elements a resolvable record carries: consistent details, structured data, identity links, third-party corroboration.
  • Verificationthe checks that confirm whether a name resolves today: knowledge panel, Wikidata query, assistant answer.

What entity SEO is

Entity SEO is the practice of making a business resolvable as a record rather than readable as a name. Assistants match queries to records with identifiers. A business without one competes as an ambiguous string.

An entity is a thing with a resolvable identifier: a record carrying attributes and relationships, addressable independently of the words used to name it. A knowledge graph is the database holding those records and the connections between them — Google operates one behind its search results, and Wikidata operates a public one anyone queries directly. A QID is Wikidata's identifier for a single record, written as the letter Q followed by digits. A name resolves to a record, and the record carries a QID.

Generative engine optimization, the discipline this site practises, is Q134083964. Wikidata records it as a subclass of search engine optimization, Q180711, with an inception date of 2023-11-16. That identifier is checkable in one click. A business name alone never carries that property.

Why a name is not an entity

A name is text. An entity is a record with a stable identifier, attributes and relationships. Two businesses sharing a name are one string and two entities. Assistants recommending a provider need the record, not the string.

Disambiguation is the task of deciding which record an ambiguous string refers to. Identical trade names recur across markets, and a name typed into an assistant carries none of the detail that separates one holder from another.

A record removes the ambiguity by construction. Q134083964 refers to one concept and to nothing else, because the identifier is itself the disambiguation. A business record works the same way: the identifier names the business, and the attributes attached to it — address, category, phone number, licence, profile URLs — separate it from every other holder of the same trade name.

Our own audit of nine Kansas City competitor pages, September 2026, covered six distinct builds: Next.js, WordPress with Elementor, WordPress with Divi, Webflow, a custom stack and a bot-protected page. Zero of the nine emitted a Wikidata reference or any entity identifier in their structured data. The Webflow page in the set referenced Wikipedia and carried no QID with it. All six compete in this market as strings.

How assistants resolve a business name

Resolution runs in three steps. The name is matched against known records. Corroborating details — location, category, contact — narrow the candidates. A confident match returns the record; an unconfident match returns nothing.

Entity resolution is the process of turning a string into a record. Three steps run in order.

  1. Matching

The typed name is compared against the records the system already holds. Every record whose name or alias matches the string enters the candidate set.

  2. Narrowing

Corroborating details reduce that set. Location, category and contact number each eliminate candidates that contradict them, and each detail repeated by an independent source raises confidence in the record it supports.

  3. Returning

A single candidate with sufficient confidence is returned as the record. A contested or empty candidate set returns nothing.

The name is matched to known records, narrowed by location and category, then returned only on a confident match.

Corroboration enters at the second step. Agreement between independent sources is what removes rival candidates, which makes third-party mentions an input to resolution rather than decoration around it.

What a resolvable record requires

Four elements build a resolvable record: consistent name, address and category across independent sources, structured data on the website carrying those values, sameAs links to public profiles, and enough third-party mentions to corroborate them.

Four elements, in the order a machine reads them:

  1. Consistency

Trade name, street address or service area, primary phone number and business category read identically on the website, in state licensing registries, in industry directories and on every profile the business controls. A contradiction between sources withdraws confidence from every source involved.

  2. Structured data

Organization markup states those same values in machine-readable form. Google's Organization documentation names name, url, address, telephone and sameAs among the properties it reads, and lists no property as required.

  3. Identity links

sameAs is schema.org's property for the "URL of a reference Web page that unambiguously indicates the item's identity". sameAs connects a page to a record: a Wikidata item, a licensing registry entry, an industry directory listing, a professional association profile.

  4. Corroboration

Independent parties repeat the same values. Wikidata's notability policy accepts an item that refers to a clearly identifiable entity describable with serious and publicly available references, which is the route a business takes to its own QID.

How to check whether yours resolves

Three checks confirm resolution. Search the exact business name and look for a knowledge panel. Query Wikidata for the name. Ask an assistant who the business is and read whether the answer describes it accurately.

  1. Search

the exact business name in Google and look beside the results for a knowledge panel. Google states that knowledge panels are generated automatically from sources across the web, and that an official representative claims an existing panel rather than creating one.

  2. Query

wikidata.org for the business name and every trade name it operates under. A returned item carries a QID. An empty result means no public identifier exists.

  3. Ask

an assistant — ChatGPT, Gemini, Perplexity, Claude, Google AI Mode — who the business is, and read the answer against the facts. An accurate description confirms the record. A competitor's details, a wrong address or a refusal confirms the failure.

Each check returns one answer. Which check fails, and what the repair costs, is the output of a structured site review.

Questions

Common questions

Every answer below ships in the raw HTML, so an assistant reading this page without running a script still receives it.

What is a QID?

A QID is Wikidata's permanent identifier for one record, written as the letter Q followed by digits. Generative engine optimization is Q134083964. The identifier resolves to that item and to no other.

Does a business need a Wikidata item?

A Wikidata item gives a business a public identifier any system reads. Wikidata's notability policy accepts an item that refers to a clearly identifiable entity describable with serious and publicly available references.

Why does an assistant name a competitor instead?

The competitor resolves to a record and the business does not. Diagnosis of that exact failure, surface by surface, is set out in why your business is missing from ai answers.

How does entity work relate to content coverage?

Entity work makes the business resolvable. Coverage makes the site worth retrieving from. Both feed source selection, and the second half is set out in topical authority and source selection.
