Zero-Click Search and Local Demand
Zero-click search describes a query answered on the results page without a visit to any site. For a Kansas City business the consequence is a reporting trap: as citations rise, impressions grow faster than clicks, so click-through rate falls exactly when the work is succeeding. This page explains the mechanism, names the enquiries that still arrive without a click, and gives the three metrics that replace CTR.
Four questions decide how a Kansas City owner reads a zero-click result: the definition, the reporting trap, the surviving enquiries, and the replacement metrics. Each is answered in its own block below.
- Definitionwhich surfaces resolve a query on the results page, and what gets recorded when they do.
- Reporting trapwhy click-through rate falls at the moment citations rise, shown as a division.
- Surviving enquiriesthe three paths that reach a business when no ranked result is clicked.
- Replacement metricsthe three numbers that record answer-engine visibility correctly.

Common questions
Every answer below ships in the raw HTML, so an assistant reading this page without running a script still receives it.
Why do two zero-click studies report different shares?
Panels and definitions differ. SparkToro measures United States searches on a Similarweb clickstream panel and counts every search ending without a click. iPullRank measures sessions on a Datos panel across 13.1 billion search events. Both figures exceed 45 percent.
Does an AI Overview citation produce traffic?
No. One Kansas City page held the citation for "kansas city ai seo" and recorded 920 impressions against 0 clicks in the six months to September 2026. A citation is measured in impressions and mentions, never in click-through rate.
Which Kansas City businesses lose the most to zero-click search?
Businesses whose buyers ask a question carrying a place name. Two companion pages cover those cases — How Local Businesses Appear in AI Answers and AI Visibility Without a Storefront.
Does zero-click search make a website unnecessary?
No. Every surface named above cites an indexed page, so the site stays the source each answer is assembled from. The page stops being the destination and becomes the evidence.
