Google AI Mode: How It Differs from AI Overviews

Google AI Mode answers in generated prose and supports follow-up questions. It decomposes each question through query fan-out, a retrieval technique Google documents for AI Overviews as well: one question becomes four to eight hidden sub-queries, retrieved separately and combined. A page answering only the question as asked can miss every sub-query. This page explains fan-out, how AI Mode differs from AI Overviews, and what both mean for how a site is structured.

The question this page answers: how does Google AI Mode decide which pages it reads before it writes an answer?

Google's own Search documentation names the mechanism — query fan-out — and describes it as issuing multiple related searches across subtopics and data sources to develop a response. Five sections take that mechanism apart: what AI Mode is, how fan-out runs, where AI Mode and AI Overviews diverge, what changes on a site as a result, and the questions readers ask next.

What Google AI Mode is

Google AI Mode is a conversational search surface that answers questions in generated prose. It occupies its own surface, supports follow-up questions, and decomposes each question more deeply than AI Overviews before assembling a response.

Three entry routes reach the surface: the address google.com/ai, the AI Mode tab on a standard results page, and the AI Mode button in the Google app. Five input types enter it: text, voice, images, PDFs and URLs. An AI Overview, by contrast, is the generated summary block placed above the classic organic results on a standard search. AI Mode is the surface where a generated answer stands alone and accepts a follow-up. Google Search Central sets one eligibility rule for both surfaces: a page must be indexed and eligible to be shown in Google Search with a snippet.

How query fan-out works

Query fan-out splits one question into multiple hidden sub-queries. A question about hiring an AI SEO agency in Kansas City generates separate retrievals for pricing, credentials, local providers and service definitions, then combines the results into one answer.

Google named the technique publicly in its Google I/O 2025 Search announcement: AI Mode breaks a question into subtopics and issues a multitude of queries simultaneously on the user's behalf. Search Central restates the same mechanism in operational terms — issuing multiple related searches across subtopics and data sources. Decomposition is the step that turns one typed question into that set of subtopic queries. The searcher sees none of them.

A Kansas City business owner types one sentence: how do I hire an AI SEO agency in Kansas City. One question about hiring an agency generated four sub-queries: pricing, credentials, local providers, service definition. Stated in full, those four read: what an AI SEO agency charges, how to verify an AI SEO agency's credentials, which AI SEO providers serve the Kansas City metro, and what generative engine optimization includes. Four retrievals run against the Google index at once. One answer comes back, assembled from whichever documents matched each of the four.

How AI Mode differs from AI Overviews

AI Overviews sit above ordinary results and answer the query as asked. AI Mode replaces the results page, supports follow-up questions, and decomposes each turn more aggressively. AI Mode retrieves across more documents per answer.

Placement divides the two first: an AI Overview sits above the classic organic results, and AI Mode occupies its own surface at google.com/ai and the AI Mode tab. Interaction divides them second: an Overview returns one answer per search, and AI Mode holds a thread that accepts follow-up questions. Retrieval technique is shared rather than exclusive — Search Central names query fan-out as a technique both surfaces use, and AI Mode applies it to every conversational turn. Retrieval pool is one index for both. Reporting is one report for both: Search Console's Generative AI performance report covers AI Overviews and AI Mode together and returns impressions only, with no clicks, no click-through rate and no query data. Passage-level selection inside an Overview is the separate subject of How Google AI Overviews Select Their Sources.

What fan-out means for your pages

Fan-out rewards breadth across adjacent questions. A single page answering one question well matches one sub-query and misses the rest. A connected set covering pricing, process, credentials and definitions matches more of the decomposed set.

Sub-queries are the unit of competition, not the question printed on a page's H1. The four retrievals in the worked example land on four different documents wherever four different documents exist. One page carrying all four answers enters one of those retrievals and forfeits three. Four page types answer those four sub-queries: a pricing page, a credentials page, a service-area page, and a definition page.

Breadth raises retrieval probability by multiplying the number of indexed documents that match a decomposed set. The gain comes from document count and coverage, never from a tag or a format. Google states the position without ambiguity: no additional requirements exist to appear in AI Overviews or AI Mode, and no special optimizations are necessary. Two ordinary conditions remain — the page is indexed, and the page is eligible to be shown with a snippet. That places the work on site structure rather than on markup.

Questions

Common questions

Every answer below ships in the raw HTML, so an assistant reading this page without running a script still receives it.

Whether the 90,500 monthly searches for "google ai mode" are worth targeting

No. Our keyword analysis classified that head term as navigational and excluded it, together with the surrounding cluster of people searching to disable the feature. Across the full dataset, 177,080 monthly searches came out on the same relevance test. Volume on a feature name measures curiosity about the feature.

Whether AI Mode needs optimization separate from AI Overviews

One eligibility rule covers both surfaces, so no separate technical track exists. The difference is coverage: AI Mode decomposes every conversational turn, which puts more adjacent documents in play. Coverage of those adjacent questions is what our optimization work builds.

Whether other assistants decompose questions the same way

Decomposition is not exclusive to Google. Retrieval source is where assistants diverge, and each one draws its web results from a different pipeline. That divergence sits outside AI Mode's mechanism and is the subject of why bing decides your chatgpt visibility.
